Howler Monkey (Baboon) Wildlife Sanctuary
Get an upclose encounter with the Howler Monkeys of Belize, locally known as "baboons". A short hike through the jungle just on the outskirts of the Bermuda Landing Village is the sanctuary, home to more baboons than humans! Howler monkeys get thier name from their loud, guttural howls that can be heard up to five miles away . They are the loudest and biggest animal in Latin America, growing to about four feet tall. They have big necks and lower jaws, where their super-sized vocal cords are housed. Male howler monkeys use their big voices to defend their turf. Howls by one troop are answered by other males within earshot. Every-one starts and ends the day by checking out where their nearest competitors are. In this way, they protect the food in their territory. Finding young, nutritious leaves is a priority. Fruit and flowers are also valued so it’s crucial that the troop stakes its claim on these treasures when they are found.
